Google Wave

Last week my group talked about Google Wave. One of the thing I think is facinating about this new piece of technology is the teachers abiliy to see the finished product along with all the work and effort that went into it. As a teacher I feel it would be very useful to use the scroll feature to view the students project in its initial phase then see who contributed to the project and how they were able to help their group. I also really liked google documents. Students are constantly emailing or scaning notes or projects to help out fellow team members. I think google docs could make it easier for students to share notes or information with the teacher or their peers. Another good thing is the student can't just tell you I forgot my notes, they can pull it up online and show them to you. I think all the tools shared in class last time are great and will significantly help us teach in our technologically advanced world.

Imovie

I didn't realize imovie could make such detailed movies. I think its great to learn how to do these things, students these days are very technologically advanced and I think they respect teachers and faculty who understand how to use it and make class interesting. It also helped me grasp the concept better when I had to watch a picture over and over again then simulate it to my narration I think it really helped me understand the Utah Core objective in a way I wouldn't have been able to do otherwise.

Pre-class Notes

In group 1 I'm in charge for sections 7&8. 7 is just creating a longer recording, all that is required is to delete your practice recording then move the playhead back to the initial starting position. Then you repeat the steps
Select the track named Male Voice.
Click the red record button.
Begin speaking.
Press the red record button again to stop recording.
Press the Play button to stop the playhead from scrolling.

When your done click the red record button to stop the recording, you'll notice that the playhead continues moving to the right to stop it you press the play button.

8 - When we want to share a podcast that we've created we select the "share" menu item and select the "Export podcast to disk" option. To save your podcast in garageband type in your desired filename and click save. After it is saved you'll need to navigate back to your garageband folder. When you get to that folder your new file should be there. If the Finder is set up to show filename extensions you'll also see the extension "m4a" on the end of your file, or if it's set up to show files in columns, the "Kind" column will show that this file is an "mpg4 audio file". This is a compressed file format that can be used by several software applications, including iTunes.

Civil War

http://www.teachertube.com/viewVideo.php?video_id=434&title=The_American_Civil_War&ref=Sgfitz

The video posted above does a good job of blending original work with historical pictures. Because the pictures were all taken in the 1860s it appears copyright laws were not violated by using them. The music provided as background music was never cited, it could have been taken from freeplay music but a citation would be nice. There are no citations of anykind during the film or at the end, even if the music and pictures were obtain legally it should still be cited although it was used for an educational purpose.

Six Day War

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8qBMm5Aeq8

The video seems to break a lot of copyright rules. It lasts for four minutes and to show it in a classroom I feel would be a violation since I didn't purchase the the video from an actual source.

Notes 1/28/10

Copyright Law - If you show less than 10% of a movie or 30 seconds of a song it is OK to share in your class or with your students. There are fare play films that are OK to use in your classrooms for educational purposes. My assignment for this week 7&8 in group one.

When I think of social networking the first three things that come to my mind are face book, blogs and twitter. All of these social networking sites seemed to develop right before or during my mission. Before my mission few if any of my friends used these networks and after my mission it became the norm. Serving a mission allowed me to take a two year break from technology and see how much the world had change while I was gone. These are a couple gospel implications I can see coming from social networking.

On my mission I ran into many of the same problems that exsist with our members throughout the world. Many members are afraid to tell their friends about the church or friends and family don't want to hear about the church. To push religious conversation on a friend or family member who has no interest can make that relationship rather awkward. So what do you do? I feel one of the great things about social networking is our ability to show how members of the church are like in a non-threatening way. It takes courage for someone to committ to go to church to see what members are like. But when pictures of Temples, family's, ward activities and religious blog posts are just a click away friends who are curious can view a good wholesome example of what a member of the church is like. One of my friends shared a brief description of his wedding on his facebook account. There was a picture of him and his wife outside the Temple and he described the wedding with phrases and words like "together for ever," "worthy," "pure," "Savior," "Redemer" and "Jesus Christ." It provided a perfect simple description of how we view marriage in the church and the sacred nature of families. I think when social networking is used right it can become wonderful source to share the gospel in a non-threating way to friends and family in a way thats comfortable to everyone.
